A for Adjustment: an A to Z Challenge

"Every girl in our family bears these problem, why can't you do the same and adjust accordingly?" Those words keep ringing in her mind, though in vain. It takes her back to what exactly she was trying to adjust to?

"You're married now, you should sleep with your husband whenever he demands to." Said doting mother of her so-called husband.

"If you won't service me when I need you, you'll know what a Man can do to a woman." Loving words of her so-called husband.

"Don't worry about all this, I'll take care of everyone, you just do what I ask for and in return you'll  always be happy." Words of her loving father-in-law who spread his hand on her backless blouse clad body.

"Who do you think you are? Didn't you know that you became our property when you got married to my brother?" Reminder from her sweet little sister-in-law.

There was nothing wrong in her life, I mean there was no domestic violence, no dowry demands from her in-laws because come on, they already have a house full of 'Love' her father showered in her marriage.

So what was her problem? Her parents always wondered when she refused to go back to her in-laws.

She was taught that she is not an object, her father treated her like a princess and made her a woman she is today; strong, no-bullshit attitude, who cried when she is wrong but fought like a warrior when she is blamed unnecessarily! So when her father stood helpless in front of her, she felt like a loser because she cannot see tears in her Father's eyes but she knew she couldn't live there one more second and in the long run, what she has to do will hurt her Father more; she tried to kill herself.

There were things she cannot tell anyone about; she was ashamed, scared, bewildered of what all was happening. She didn't know what to do and how to approach this situation and then she found out the dates written in a diary; there were notes suggesting when she had her periods and when she had intercourse along with number of times on a particular day, when she visited her doctor and what all medicine she took.

Those parting words still makes her shiver, "Give me a child and no one will bother you again..." but she still don't have an answer to satiate her parents, this society and all those relatives who look at her like why can't you do that? Why can't you just ADJUST?
